What is Outliers about ?

1. What is an outlier?

“Outlier” is a scientific term to describe things or phenomena that lie outside normal experience. In the summer, in Paris, we expect most days to be somewhere between warm and very hot. But imagine if you had a day in the middle of August where the temperature fell below freezing. That day would be outlier. And while we have a very good understanding of why summer days in Paris are warm or hot, we know a good deal less about why a summer day in Paris might be freezing cold. In this book I’m interested in people who are outliers book in men and women who, for one reason or another, are so accomplished and so extraordinary and so outside of ordinary experience that they are as puzzling to the rest of us as a cold day in August.

2. Why did you write Outliers?

I write books when I find myself returning again and again, in my mind, to the same themes. I wrote Tipping Point because I was fascinated by the sudden drop in crime in New York City – and that fascination grew to an interest in the whole idea of epidemics and epidemic processes. I wrote Blink because I began to get obsessed, in the same way, with the way that all of us seem to make up our minds about other people in an instant book without really doing any real thinking. In the case of Outliers, the book grew out a frustration I found myself having with the way we explain the careers of really successful people. You know how you hear someone say of Bill Gates or some rock star or some other outlier – “they’re really smart,” or “they’re really ambitious?’ Well, I know lots of people who are really smart and really ambitious, and they aren’t worth 60 billion dollars. It struck me that our understanding of success was really crude book and there was an opportunity to dig down and come up with a better set of explanations.

3. In what way are our explanations of success “crude?”

That’s a bit of a puzzle because we certainly don’t lack for interest in the subject. If you go to the bookstore, you can find a hundred success manuals, or biographies of famous people, or self-help books that promise to outline the six keys to great achievement. (Or is it seven?) So we should be pretty sophisticated on the topic. What I came to realize in writing Outliers, though, is that we’ve been far too focused on the individual book on describing the characteristics and habits and personality traits of those who get furthest ahead in the world. And that’s the problem, because in order to understand the outlier I think you have to look around them -at their culture and community and family and generation. We’ve been looking at tall trees, and I think we should have been looking at the forest.

4. Can you give some examples?

Sure. For example, one of the chapters looks at the fact that a surprising number of the most powerful and successful corporate lawyers in New York City have almost the exact same biography: they are Jewish men, born in the Bronx or Brooklyn in the mid-1930’s to immigrant parents who worked in the garment industry. Now, you can call that a coincidence. Or you can ask-as I do-what is about being Jewish and being part of the generation born in the Depression and having parents who worked in the garment business that might have something to do with turning someone into a really, really successful lawyer? And the answer is that you can learn a huge amount about why someone reaches the top of that profession by asking those questions.

5. Doesn’t that make it sound like success is something outside of an individual’s control?

I don’t mean to go that far. But I do think that we vastly underestimate the extent to which success happens because of things the individual has nothing to do with. Outliers opens, for example, by examining why a hugely disproportionate number of professional hockey and soccer players are born in January, February and March. I’m not going to spoil things for you by giving you the answer. But the point is that very best hockey players are people who are talented and work hard but who also benefit from the weird and largely unexamined and peculiar ways in which their world is organized. I actually have a lot of fun with birthdates in Outliers. Did you know that there’s a magic year to be born if you want to be a software entrepreneur? And another magic year to be born if you want to be really rich? In fact, one nine year stretch turns out to have produced more Outliers than any other period in history. It’s remarkable how many patterns you can find in the lives of successful people, when you look closely.

6. What’s the most surprising pattern you uncovered in the book?

It’s probably the chapter nearly the end of Outliers where I talk about plane crashes. How good a pilot is, it turns out, has a lot to do with where that pilot is from-that is, the culture he or she was raised in. I was actually stunned by how strong the connection is between culture and crashes, and it’s something that I would never have dreamed was true, in a million years.

7. Wait. Does this mean that there are some airlines that I should avoid?

Yes. Although, as I point out in Outliers, by acknowledging the role that culture plays in piloting, some of the most unsafe airlines have actually begun to clean up their act.

8. In Tipping Point, you had an entire chapter on suicide. In Blink, you ended the book with a long chapter on the Diallo shooting-and now plane crashes. Do you have a macabre side?

Yes! I’m a frustrated thriller writer! But seriously, there’s a good reason for that. I think that we learn more from extreme circumstances than anything else; disasters tell us something about the way we think and behave that we can’t learn from ordinary life. That’s the premise of Outliers. It’s those who lie outside ordinary experience who have the most to teach us.

9. How does this book compare to Blink and The Tipping Point?

It’s different, in the sense that it’s much more focused on people and their stories. The subtitle-”The Story of Success”-is supposed to signal that. A lot of the book is an attempt to describe the lives of successful people, but to tell their stories in a different way than we’re used to. I have a chapter that deals, in part, with explaining the extraordinary success of Bill Gates. But I’m not interested in anything that happened to him past the age of about 17. Or I have a chapter explaining why Asian schoolchildren are so good at math. But it’s focused almost entirely on what the grandparents and great-grandparents and great-great grandparents of those schoolchildren did for a living. You’ll meet more people in Outliers than in my previous two books.

10. What was your most memorable experience in researching Outliers?

There were so many! I’ll never forget the time I spent with Chris Langan, who might be the smartest man in the world. I’ve never been able to feel someone’s intellect before, the way I could with him. It was an intimidating experience, but also profoundly heartbreaking-as I hope becomes apparent in “The Trouble with Geniuses” chapter. I also went to south China and hung out in rice paddies, and went to this weird little town in eastern Pennsylvania where no one ever has a heart attack, and deciphered aircraft “black box” recorders with crash investigators. I should warn all potential readers that once you get interested in the world of plane crashes, it becomes very hard to tear yourself away. I’m still obsessed.

11. What do you want people to take away from Outliers?

I think this is the way in which Outliers is a lot like Blink and Tipping Point. They are all attempts to make us think about the world a little differently. The hope with Tipping Point was it would help the reader understand that real change was possible. With Blink, I wanted to get people to take the enormous power of their intuition seriously. My wish with Outliers is that it makes us understand how much of a group project success is. When outliers become outliers it is not just because of their own efforts. It’s because of the contributions of lots of different people and lots of different circumstances- and that means that we, as a society, have more control about who succeeds-and how many of us succeed-than we think. That’s an amazingly hopeful and uplifting idea.

12. I noticed that the book is dedicated to “Daisy.” Who is she?

Daisy is my grandmother. She was a remarkable woman, who was responsible for my mother’s success-for the fact that my mother was able to get out of the little rural village in Jamaica where she grew up, get a University education in England and ultimately meet and marry my father. The last chapter of Outliers is an attempt to understand how Daisy was able to make that happen-using all the lessons learned over the course of the book. I’ve never written something quite this personal before. I hope readers find her story as moving as I did.

According to JobsDB Dimension, the leading online recruitment network in Asia Pacific, e-Recruitment involves the integration and utilization of internet technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of recruitment process.

It is a challenge for BKKBN, and especially for the Human Resource Department (HRD), to adopt an e-Recruitment system because we never experienced  the application of such complex technical approaches. Nevertheless, HDR is committed to prepare everything needed to support this system, including the hardware (computer server), software (application system), and the organizing committee of stakeholders who are needed to guide the process. Furthermore, HRD has collaborated with the BKKBN Bureau of Data Processing and Information Technology (DITTEK) and an external Information Technology Consultant (MAXIMA) to assist with the challenges of the new information technologies. The MAXIMA is providing the application program (software program), which is operated using an internet browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape. The application program can be accessed through the BKKBN official website (http://www.bkkbn.go.id).

E-Recruitment Process
Overall, the recruitment process consists of three stages: registration and administration of selection, academic competence test, and interview. The registration process is an online system. On the other hand, the assessment test is paper-based. Besides do online registration, applicants can also access the results of each stage of selection and knowing the latest developments of the selection process through the official website.
The process of online registration is simple and easy to use. The applicants just browse the internet and visit the BKKBN official website. Before filling the registration form, the applicants have to download information about job vacancies and requirements. After meeting the requirements; the applicants can continue to the next step. They just click the registration icon that appears on the homepage and follow the instructions on how to register.

First, every applicant should answer some questions to access the online application system. Second, the applicants must fill the registration form with their personal data, educational background, and the job position. Finally, the applicants will get the online registration code if they meet the requirements.

The next stage of recruitment process is the applicants must send their resume and other documents through Post Office Box address. The committee will validate their data and publish the written test announcement through the website.  The applicants who pass the written test will have an interview with the committee as the last stage. The applicants, who are accepted, will be announced through the website.

Problems of accessing e-Recruitment system:

Despite its advantages, the E-Recruitment process is not without problems. The most common difficulty encountered to date is associated with internet usage. According to Drs. Sjafrul, MBA, Head of Processing and Data Base Division, there are four main problems in e-Recruitment system:

1.    Website Security System. The current website security system can be overcome by intruders or hackers. This would cause system errors and could even make the site inaccessible to the applicants. Therefore, the website security system should be upgraded to make it invulnerable.

2.    Limited Internet connection. The limited or unstable internet connection interrupts the registration process especially in some provinces that lack of internet coverage like West Sulawesi and Papua. The applicants often face problem with the internet connection when accessing the application system. Bad internet connection will hamper the registration process and adversely affect the applicants. The impact of this connection problem is a decrease in number of applicants. The recruitment committee and the IT consultant cannot overcome this problem because it is the authority of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) like PT. Telkomunikasi Indonesia and INDOSAT M2.

3.    Low bandwidth capacity. Bandwidth refers to the data transmission capacity of a communications channel. The greater a channel’s bandwidth, the more information it can carry per unit of time. Recently, the main server only has 5 Mbps of bandwidth capacity; If the server doesn’t have sufficient bandwidth capacity to meet the demand, it will cause slow loading speeds and frustating to use. Moreover, the worst impact is the failure of data and information transmission from the applicants.

4.    Limited quantity number for users. The IT consultant has designed the application program to allow high number of users to access this system. However, the application system has limited license for users so it can disturb the system while the number of people who want access the website is higher than the license quota.

Drs. Sjafrul, MBA gave some suggestions and recommendations to solve these problems. BKKBN must improve its website security system by installing advanced security software (firewall) and changing the password regularly. Furthermore, back up server is needed as a mirror for the main server to back up the data if the system hangs or problem with electricity. Moreover, increasing bandwidth capacity also very important to ensure the system will run well. Renting bandwidth (up to 1000 Mbps) during the recruitment period is a solution for this problem. The last suggestion is improving operators or administrators’ skill by holding some training because they play important role in running the online system.

In conclusion, the solution to technical problems is more than technology; it is an ongoing process involving people and practices. Although, this is the first time to adapt e-recruitment method for BKKBN, we believe that with good preparation and coordination, everything will run smoothly.

According to Prof. Geoff Gallop (Graduate School of Government, The University of Sydney) leadership is the biggest challenge of all: for individuals, organizations, and governments. It is the inevitability of change.

The major drivers of change are Technology (do business through the internet), Economic (China becoming a powerful country because of its emerging economy, Cultural (powerful force), Social (expectation of people), Environmental (climate change), Political (new political movement is coming) and Events (no one can predict what will happen in the future). The world is changing because of globalization so we have to understand the world and think forward.

Politics is not a science because we cannot possibly know the future’s precise contours. Human affairs are too sensitive to serendipity and chance, to fad, to the whims of leadership, and to the unexpected advent of new technologies.

The importance of leadership are the narrative for the times, public policy “horses for courses”, personal and political skills. Prof. Gallop said that leadership is about judgment, judgment, and judgement.

Nowadays, more and more children in western society are having a problem with their weight. They are becoming fatter and overweight. That is a fact; the survey result showed that the percentage of overweight children has increased to 20% in the last decade. That is a big problem for us, we have to solve this problem to save our children.

The question is why are so many children getting fatter and more overweight? We have to find out what the causes are. I think there are several things that can cause this problem. First, many children do not like to eat healthy food. They prefer to eat fast food or junk food as their meal because it is easy to find and cheaper than nutritional food. It can happen because their parents are not concerned about their meals. They just give money to their children to buy meals at school and probably around their neighborhood. Second, many children do not like to do exercise. They prefer to watch TV or play computer games. Furthermore, they watch TV or play games for many hours and while they are watching, they eat some junk food or snacks, which contain a lot of sugar and fat. They also love to drink soft drinks like Coca-cola and Sprite.

Children who consume a great deal of junk food, soft drinks and get less exercise become overweight. Having an overweight body can cause illness or an unhealthy body. They also become lazy to do some activities because it is hard for them to deal with their big body.

The solutions are to provide healthy foods for our children and ask them to do some sports. Parents should be more aware of their children. Do not allow them eat unhealthy food. Parents have to teach their children to have good habits and healthy lifestyle.

Children are our next generation so we should take care of them and pay attention to them. If they are healthy and smart, our nation will be a powerful country in the future.

A woman plays many roles in her lives. Not only as a wife but also a mother, a cook, a housewife, and also an employee or a businesswoman. A woman is like a miracle from God because of her beauty and feeling. The experts say that a woman’s attitudes are most influenced by her emotions. That is why a woman is good at taking care of children, so naturally woman’s responsibility is to take care of her children and home.

In contrast, since twenty years ago woman’s position in the society has changed from housewives into career women. More women in the world are well educated. They went to schools and university to get a higher education so after graduating from school or university; women are going to find jobs as their appreciation of themselves. They also go to work for economic reasons. Women feel proud when they can earn money by themselves and help their husbands to support family budgets. As a result, there are many problems in the family, such as juvenile delinquency. Some people said that it happened because now many married woman go to work and are busy with their jobs so their children have a lack of attention and care.

In my opinion, I do not agree with the statement, which says that young people now become rude or naughty because their mothers are not at home. If the mother is a housewife, it will not guarantee that the children will have good attitudes. Children’s behaviour is influenced by the nurture factors such as the people around them, the environment and many more. For example, many children commit crimes because of their friends’ influences. Furthermore, working mother usually protect their children by having a maid or baby sitter. They are more concerned about their children’s education and growth.

In conclusion, I want to say that a mother working does not have too much influence on young people’s problems. It is the responsibility of both father and mother to take care of and educate their children to be good persons. Parents can send their children to the schools or nursery to make sure their children will be ok.
